Spring clean your unused medications in 1, 2, 3!

If you are still unsure of how to properly dispose of your medications, ask your primary care provider or pharmacist.

It’s a good idea to clean out your medicine cabinet periodically, but how should you dispose of unused and expired medications? Follow these three tips.

  1. First, remove the drug from its original container and place in a sealable plastic bag.
  2. Destroy and disguise it by mixing it with water, coffee grounds, or kitty litter, then toss.
  3. Before you throw out prescription containers, remember to first black out or remove personal information.

Narcotics and other controlled substances often carry instructions to flush unused medications down the toilet. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a complete list of flushable medications here.

If you are still unsure of how to properly dispose of your medications, ask your primary care provider or pharmacist.
