What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stressful events or dangerous situations. It can help keep us safe or help us perform better. When it starts to interfere with daily life, or is hard to control, an anxiety disorder may be to blame. Luckily, anxiety disorders are treatable with medication, therapy, or a combination of both. The sooner treatment begins, the better it works.

Is Anxiety a Risk Factor for Suicide?

An undiagnosed anxiety disorder is just one of the many risk factors for suicide. Someone with uncontrolled or severe anxiety may have thoughts, feelings, or plans to hurt themselves or take their own life.Three common warning signs for suicide are:

  • Thoughts of hurting yourself (such as cutting or burning)
  • Talking to others about wanting to die
  • Making plans to take your own life
